How to enjoy Doctor Who

Here is a list of recommendations and advice to navigate through the universe and expanded universe of Doctor Who:

  • The first recommendation is obvious: start with the TV show. There are multiple places to begin. It doesn't matter which doctor is your first because you can always watch the previous episodes later (although you can miss some references). If you want to start from the beginning, the best option is the 9th Doctor (the new era of Doctor Who). Don't worry if you don't like the first season, because after that everything is better.
  • All the important information is in the TV show, so the Expanded Universe (novels, audio plays, comics...) only adds to the specific (and not so important) lore and to the entertainment. You don't miss anything important if you don't want to watch or read any of the Expanded Universe.
  • Now you have 3 ways to enjoy the Doctor Who Expanded Universe
    • While you are watching the TV show, you can read, listen and watch the Expanded Universe in order or not, as you want, without having to pause the viewing of the show. You can perfectly watch episode 5 of the second season (10th Doctor) and beginning now the first novel of the 9th Doctor.
    • You can watch and read everything in chronological order. It could be more immersive but I recommend you the other option, especially with the 9th Doctor, who you begin to like when you finish all their episodes and you are watching the first episodes of the 10th Doctor.
    • You can watch and read everything in release order. Maybe the best way to approach every creation related to entertainment but there are 2 complications: Doctor Who is so vast and there are so many characters, stories and Doctors that it may be better to separate the Expanded Universe into the different Doctors; and the second complication is that I can't find a release order list.
  • People say that is better to start with the Expanded Universe by reading, listening or watching things of your favourite Doctor, so there is no correct way to enjoy Doctor Who.
  • Besides, they are always creating new content for the other Doctors, so it doesn't matter if you read it in chronological order or not. You can skip whatever you don't like or you can go back to read something you missed or something new that they create that is set in the Doctor's past.
